The Department of Accounting and Finance, School of Management Science and Accounting, of the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), was established in May 2019 under Law 4610 (Government Gazette 90/A/07-05-2019), entitled “Synergies between Universities and Technological Educational Institutes (TEIs), access to higher education, experimental schools, General State Archives and other provisions,” and was incorporated into Democritus University of Thrace pursuant to Article 6 of Law 5094/2024.
Prior to this, the Department of Accounting and Finance of the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Institute of Technology (TEI AMTH) existed and was among the first departments established at the former Kavala Technological Educational Institute (TEI Kavala), later TEI AMTH and now the International Hellenic University (IHU). Historically, it has been one of the largest departments of the School of Management and Economics, with approximately 3,500 enrolled students, of whom approximately 2,100 actively participate in the educational process.
The Department’s development and academic work have established it as one of the leading academic departments in Greece in this field. It is therefore not surprising that the Department of Accounting and Finance of the International Hellenic University has been the first choice for a significant number of prospective students. This fact, combined with the quality of the education provided and the established professional rights of its graduates, makes the Department of Accounting and Finance of DUTH an important, reputable, and competitive educational unit in Greece.
The purpose of the Department of Accounting and Finance is to make a systematic and continuous effort to renew knowledge at all levels and to introduce the most recent educational and research methods, techniques, and procedures, with a focus on creativity, innovation, and pioneering approaches, and to apply them within businesses and organizations in both the private and public sectors.
